Search help

Simple search: type Japanese (kanji, hiragana or katakana), romaji. Romaji is forgiving: toukyou, tokyo and tōkyō are equivalent. Hiragana and katakana are treated alike, and matching is case-insensitive. Leave the box empty to browse everything.

Regular expression (tick the box) supports standard JavaScript syntax:

^たstarts with た
る$ends with る
か.るか, any one character, る
^.{2}$exactly two characters
cat|dogeither word
[あいう]ますone of the listed characters
colou?roptional character (? * +)
\bwork\bwhole word "work"

With "Everything" selected, a regex is tested against the headword, reading, romaji and English meaning separately, so ^ and $ anchor each field. Whole-word / exact match only applies to simple search.
